Excellent Temperament
Thank you for taking a few minutes to visit my website. I grew up and went to school in Shawnee Kansas. After a stint in he United States Navy I came back to Johnson county in 1977 and after selling cars for awhile, I found myself with a wolfdog that I had no idea how to handle or train and that is where my dog training odyssey began. That was fall of 1979.
I enrolled ia Kansas state certified 16 week K9 Instructors school in 1981 operated by Mr. Frank M. Catania, a former United States Army K9 Instructor during Viet Nam era.
My career in the dog training business had begun. I was working as kennel help in the beginning. I wound up staying 5 years and eventually becoming kennel manager and certified K9 instructor. During the day I cleaned kennels and fed about 50 of the meanest dogs in Kansas City daily as well as full blooded wolves and wolf dogs. My friends called me 'SCOOP'.
It was common knowledge around Kansas City in those days that if your German Shepherd or Doberman or any large breed became a liability, you gave it to Frank Catainia so it wouldn't be euthanized. Then Frank would rent them out or re-train them using his students to do the handling. It was on the job training. The he would then sometimes resell them. At the same time, he would take in young wannabe dog trainers like myself and teach them how to handle and train these dangerous dogs.
We bred wolfdogs we called Tundra Shepherds because the wolves we cross bred with German Shepherds were Alaskan subspecies. At some point I suggested putting 'American' in front of the name and the ATS dog was born but that is another story. I have a lot of stories about working at MidWest Security K9 corps for Frank
He was my friend and I still miss him.
Frank was a fierce advocate of the Pitbull breed and fought breed specific legislation early on which he doesn't get credit for. He had a custom weight pull sled built for the local American Dog Breeders Asssociation pitbull club to hold competitions. I picked it up at the metal fabricating shop myself. Super heavy duty. I have had the privilage of working with many pitbulls and fighting breeds of all shapes and sizes during my career.
Franks memory and all the Pitbulls I have known inspired me to create my new Pitbull temperament certification app.
Frank taught me well and I never got bit. I worked there until 1987.
He was a great teacher and taught us in the same manner as he did in the Army. He was hardcore old school.
The crazy thing was that Mr.Catania had been a quadraplegic since the 1970's. Yet he managed to run a guard dog kennel until 2010 although the guard dog rental days were long past.
He is buried at Fort Leavenworth Army Cemetary. Below is an excerpt from his Obituary.
Frank was in the K-9 corp. during Vietnam and was awarded a Bronze Star for his work with dogs and authoring the U.S. Army manual FM 20-20 (Military Dog Training and Deployment} 117 pages. After leaving the army in 1968 he started Mid-West K-9 Training Estates in Edwardsville KS where he spent his life developing a new breed of dog. He is recognized as the founder and developer of the American Tundra Shepherd. Throughout the K-9 community Frank will always be remembered for his knowledge and being one of the great teachers of all time. He will be greatly missed and was loved by many including his dogs, pigeons and birds. Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, Dec 11th, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 11311 Johnson Dr., Shawnee. Military graveside services with full honors will be at Leavenworth Kansas National Cemetery in Leavenworth, KS. A partial list of Frank's achievements include: Chief Army K-9 Instructor & Veterinary Technician; Awarded a Bronze Star by the US Army for his research & development of K-9 behavior evaluation and training methods; VP & State Agent for the Humane Societies Inc.; Dir. of Edwardsville Animal Control; originator of Guard Dog Rental Services in KC; Court Pet Expert Witness; Dir. for the First Canine Explorer Post in the USA: No. 2907 for the Boy Scouts of America; Boy Scout Counselor for Dog Training & Veterinary Technicians; Advisor to the Kansas State Legislature for House Bill 2900, Vicious Dog Act

I am not just a dog trainer, I was taught as a K-9 Instructor, teacher and coach.
I don't board and train or train your dog for you.
You are the trainer. Dogs do better with one trainer 'YOU'! This is a scientific fact.
I have been working with the owners of many breeds of dogs in the Kansas city area over 40 years.
In conclusion a lot has changed in the dog training industry in that time since I first went to Frank Catania's K9 Instructors school. I started out learning 'Old' school dog training. I had to learn modern dog training over the ensuing years. I have always striven to keep up with the latest developments in dog training. I attended many working dog and biting sports seminars and collected the latest high end training videos. I didn't compete in dog sports unfortunately. I was always struggling to make a living and acquiring other skills while training with my associates.
